A short history of Thornbury
Thornbury is best known for its Tudor castle, begun in 1511 by the Duke of Buckingham and now a hotel, and for the broad, historic High Street that runs through the town, with the tall tower of St Mary's Church close by. Henry VIII is recorded as staying at the castle in 1535. Much of the old town centre is a conservation area, and many of its buildings are centuries old.
Over the last century Thornbury has grown considerably, with newer estates spreading out around the old core, and it's now a busy town for families and commuters, with Bristol, Yate and the M5 close by. Villages such as Alveston, Olveston, Tytherington and Oldbury-on-Severn sit within a short drive, and the Severn Estuary and its low-lying land lie to the west.
Practical tips for getting work done in Thornbury
If your home is in the conservation area or listed, check what consents you need before altering windows, roofs or frontages, and ask tradespeople whether they've worked on similar buildings. Properties on lower ground near the estuary can be more exposed to damp, so mention any history of damp or flooding when you ask for quotes. Finally, with plenty of commuters in the area, say when you're home and what times suit, so you can compare like for like.
